Feat: Curator of the Umbral Archive
You once catalogued truths that were never meant to be read aloud. Even now, the shadows around you behave like footnotes—quietly correcting reality.
Benefits
📚 Shadow Marginalia
When you finish a long rest, choose one creature, location, or object you can name that exists on the same plane. The shadows around you recall a suppressed annotation about it. The DM must tell you one obscure, forgotten, or deliberately hidden fact—not its full stat block or secrets, but something useful and unsettling.
This might be a superstition that is true, a discarded prophecy, or a secret someone worked to erase.
The information always arrives as a whisper, moving text, or shifting shadow-script.
🕯 Ink That Refuses to Fade
You can write in shadow. Any text you inscribe in dim light or darkness becomes Umbral Script:
Invisible in bright light
Faintly readable in dim light
Perfectly legible in darkness
You and any creature you designate can read it. Others require detect magic, true seeing, or a successful DC 15 Investigation check in darkness.
🕳 Footnote Step
When you are in dim light or darkness, you can use a bonus action to slip into a nearby shadow and reappear in another shadow you can see within 15 feet.
This movement makes no sound.
After using this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
🔍 Redacted Presence
Once per long rest, when a creature targets you with an attack, spell, or ability that relies on sight or knowledge of your position, you may impose disadvantage as your form momentarily blurs into overlapping silhouettes, like conflicting historical accounts.
Flavor Notes for Roleplay
Shadows near you subtly rearrange themselves into sigils, page numbers, or catalog marks.
When you lie, the shadows do not participate.
Libraries feel aware of you.
You instinctively know when something has been removed from a record.
