From birth, you have perceived the inner flame of sentient beings — a manifestation of emotion, intent, and will made faintly visible to you.
Emotional Perception
You can intuitively sense the dominant emotional state of a creature you can see within 30 feet, as well as its relative intensity (muted, steady, heightened, or overwhelming).
This does not reveal thoughts, memories, or specific intentions.
A creature can attempt to mask its emotions with a Deception check contested by your Insight.
Emotional Fluency
You gain advantage on Persuasion and Deception checks when the check relies primarily on amplifying, soothing, or redirecting an emotion the target is already experiencing.
This benefit does not apply if you attempt to fabricate an emotion that is clearly inappropriate to the situation.
Emotional Surge
You can momentarily distort an emotion already present within a creature.
As an action, choose one creature you can see within 30 feet that is experiencing a noticeable emotional state. The creature must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier).
-
On a failure, the creature’s emotion surges unnaturally until the end of its next turn. The DM chooses one emotional distortion appropriate to the emotion, such as:
-
Fear: hesitation, freezing briefly, or avoiding a specific creature
-
Rage: overcommitting, tunneling on one target, or ignoring safer options
-
Despair: sluggish action, second-guessing, or withdrawal
-
Confidence / Joy: reckless confidence, lowered caution, or unnecessary risk
The distortion should impose a minor but meaningful behavioral or tactical drawback, without removing the creature’s agency entirely.
The creature is aware that its emotional state was unnaturally influenced.
-
-
On a success, the effect fails.
If you attempt to intensify an emotion that is clearly absent or contradictory to the situation, the feature fails automatically.
You can use Emotional Surge a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest.
Backlash of Overreach
If a creature succeeds on its saving throw by 5 or more, you suffer emotional recoil. Until the end of your next turn:
-
you cannot use Emotional Surge again, and
-
you have disadvantage on your next Charisma-based ability check.
