“Do not fight with your inner dragon. Tame it down.
It will growl, and one day will fall in love with you.
Pet your fear and it will take you over the mountain top.”
Dragons are feared as hoarders and tyrants, yet revered as ancient beings of immense intellect and will. To undergo a Dragon Transformation is to take on both their power and their nature: scales creep across your skin, your presence grows heavier, and pride and hunger stir within your heart. With each stage, you become more like them in form and temperament, gaining strength at the risk of greed, isolation, and the slow, intoxicating pull of draconic dominance.
——————————————————————————————————————————
Dragon Stage I: Wyrmling
“One should not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for people are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.”
When you first undergo the Dragon Transformation, choose a Dragon Type from the Dragon Type Table. Your chosen type determines the damage type and saving throw associated with your Dragon Transformation features (such as your breath weapon).
At Stage I, you gain two Stage I Boons of your choice and the Stage I Flaw.
Stage I Boon: Draconic Wings
As a bonus action, you manifest leathery wings for 1 hour. While manifested, you gain a flying speed equal to your walking speed.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your transformation stage, regaining all expended uses after a short or long rest. Upon reaching Stage III in the Dragon Transformation, your wings become permanent.
Additionally, you gain the Dragon creature type in addition to any other types you possess.
Stage I Boon: Draconic Resilience
Small, hardened scales spread across your skin. While you are not wearing armor, your AC becomes 13 + your Constitution modifier.
You also gain resistance to the damage type associated with your chosen Dragon Type. Your scales reflect the coloration of that Dragon Type. Upon reaching Stage III, this resistance becomes immunity instead.
Stage I Boon: Draconic Heart
Your body begins to channel draconic magic. You may use your Constitution modifier in place of your normal spellcasting ability modifier for spell attack rolls and spell save DCs.
If you are not already proficient in Constitution saving throws, you gain half proficiency in them.
——————————————————————————————————————————
Stage I Flaw: Insatiable Greed
Draconic greed begins to twist your instincts. The first time after each long rest that you part with more than 10,000 gp, or when you come within line of sight of more than 10,000 gp worth of wealth, you must make a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your transformation stage + your proficiency bonus).
On a failure, your possessive instincts distract you: for the next hour, you have disadvantage on the first ability check, saving throw, and attack roll you make. On a success, you are unaffected for 1 hour.
——————————————————————————————————————————
Dragon Stage II: Drake
“Mercy is for the weak. A dragon demands respect, and earns it through the force of its claws.”
Upon reaching Stage II of the Dragon Transformation, you gain one Stage II Boon of your choice and the Stage II Flaw.
Stage II Boon: Draconic Presence
Your teeth sharpen, claws harden, and a powerful tail grows behind you. You gain three natural weapons — bite, claws, and tail — which you can use in place of an unarmed strike or weapon attack.
These natural weapons deal 2d6 + your Strength or Dexterity modifier damage. The damage increases by 1d6 at each subsequent transformation stage (3d6 at Stage III and 4d6 at Stage IV).
- Bite deals piercing damage.
- Claws deal slashing damage.
- Tail deals bludgeoning damage and has 5 feet of additional reach.
You gain a bonus to attack rolls made with these natural weapons equal to half your proficiency bonus (rounded down).
Stage II Boon: Draconic Breath
You gain a breath weapon reflecting your chosen Dragon Type. As an action, you exhale destructive energy in either a 15-foot cone or a 5-foot-wide, 30-foot-long line.
The breath weapon deals 6d8 damage of your dragon’s associated type. This increases by 2d8 for each additional transformation stage (8d8 at Stage III and 10d8 at Stage IV). Creatures make the saving throw determined by your chosen Dragon Type. The save DC equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your transformation stage.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your transformation stage, regaining all expended uses after a long rest.
Stage II Boon: Draconic Fortitude
Your body grows resilient and imposing. Your maximum hit points increase by an amount equal to half your level. You gain advantage on Constitution saving throws made to maintain concentration, as well as on saving throws against being Poisoned, Frightened, or Charmed.
Additionally, if you selected Draconic Resilience at Stage I, whenever you take damage of your chosen draconic type, you can use your reaction to reduce that damage by a number of d8s equal to your transformation stage. If you did not take Draconic Resilience, you do not gain this damage reduction.
——————————————————————————————————————————
Stage II Flaw: Protect the Hoard
Your possessiveness deepens, making generosity difficult. When you attempt to share resources or use a spell or feature that directly benefits an ally, you must make a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your transformation stage). On a failure, you cannot bring yourself to part with the resource or magic: the action is wasted, and if you were casting a spell, the spell slot is expended with no effect. This flaw can trigger no more than once per minute.
——————————————————————————————————————————
Dragon Stage III: Dragon
“Legs may fail to swim. A mouth may stumble to speak. A tail may fail to hold balance. Claws may miss their swipe. But wings will never forsake you.”
Upon reaching Stage III of the Dragon Transformation, you gain one Stage III Boon of your choice and the Stage III Flaw.
Stage III Boon: Draconic Surge | Prerequisite Boon: Draconic Breath
The first time you would be reduced to 0 hit points, you instead drop to a number of hit points equal to your level + your transformation stage as elemental power erupts from you.
Each creature of your choice within 30 feet must make the saving throw associated with your breath weapon (DC = 8 + your Constitution modifier + your transformation stage), taking your breath weapon’s damage on a failure or half as much on a success.
You immediately regain all expended uses of your breath weapon and are affected by Haste for 3 rounds. This effect requires no concentration but ends early if you are reduced to 0 hit points again.
Stage III Boon: Draconic Intimidation
Your presence becomes overwhelming and unmistakably draconic. As an action, you unleash a terrifying roar. Creatures of your choice within 60 feet who can see or hear you must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your Constitution modifier + your transformation stage) or be Stunned until the start of their next turn and have disadvantage on all d20 tests while you remain within their line of sight for 1 minute.
An affected creature may repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your transformation stage, regaining all expended uses after a long rest.
Additionally, you gain one Legendary Action. Once per round at the end of another creature’s turn, you may use it to move up to your speed, use an object, or use Draconic Intimidation.
You also become immune to the Frightened and Poisoned conditions and immune to effects that would reduce your movement speed.
Stage III Boon: Draconic Might
Your draconic power deepens. Your maximum hit points increase by an amount equal to half your level.
If you selected the Draconic Heart Boon, your spell attack bonus and spell save DC increase by half your original spellcasting ability modifier or half your Constitution modifier (your choice), rounded down. This bonus cannot be derived from your primary spellcasting modifier.
You also gain resistance to one of the following damage types: acid, lightning, poison, fire, cold, force, psychic, thunder, necrotic, or radiant. If you gained resistance from the Draconic Resilience Boon, this new resistance must be a different type.
——————————————————————————————————————————
Stage III Flaw: Proud to a Fault
Your pride becomes volatile and easily provoked. When a hostile creature you can see targets a creature other than you with a non-area effect attack more than once in a turn, you must make a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your transformation stage).
On a failure, your pride flares into obsession. You have disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks against all creatures other than the offending creature, and other creatures have advantage on saving throws against your spells and features. This effect lasts until the offending creature is reduced to 0 hit points.
——————————————————————————————————————————
Dragon Stage IV: Greatwyrm
“What is better: To be born good or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?”
Upon reaching Stage IV of the Dragon Transformation, you gain one Stage IV Boon of your choice and the Stage IV Flaw.
Stage IV Boon: Mobile Demesne
You learn to claim territory as a true dragon does. By remaining within the same location on the Material Plane for at least 8 hours per day over 14 consecutive days, you establish a lair with a radius of up to 1 mile. This area remains your lair until you relocate your entire hoard and repeat the process elsewhere.
While within your lair, you gain the following benefits:
- You cannot be surprised and have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks.
- Whenever you finish a short or long rest, you gain temporary hit points equal to half your maximum hit points.
- You are immune to the Frightened and Charmed conditions and have advantage on saving throws against being Stunned, Incapacitated, or Restrained.
- If you do not already have a Legendary Action from the Draconic Intimidation Boon, you gain one. This Legendary Action can be used to make a natural weapon attack, use your breath weapon (if available), move up to your speed, or use an object.
After maintaining the same lair for 30 consecutive days, you can carry a fragment of its power with you. As a Magic action, you transform the surrounding 300 feet into a replica of your lair for 1 minute, gaining all lair benefits while within that area. This effect ends early if you leave the area.
Additionally, you gain one Legendary Resistance per long rest.
Stage IV Boon: True Dragon
You ascend to the pinnacle of draconic power. You no longer require food or drink and are immune to aging, both magical and nonmagical.
When you take the Attack action, you make one additional attack.
You gain one Legendary Resistance per long rest. If you have a Legendary Action from Draconic Intimidation, you may use it to make a single attack.
——————————————————————————————————————————
Stage IV Flaw: Weak Underbelly
Despite your might, your vulnerabilities deepen. Whenever you roll a natural 1 on a saving throw to avoid damage, you take double the damage instead. Additionally, whenever you suffer a critical hit, you take extra damage equal to your transformation stage × your proficiency bonus.
Dragon Type Table!
When you first undergo the Dragon Transformation, choose a dragon type from the table below. Your selection determines the damage type of your breath weapon and other draconic features, as well as the saving throw creatures must make against those effects. Your scales, wings, and other physical traits reflect the chosen lineage, marking you unmistakably with its elemental heritage.
