Your skill at dealing swift justice on the battlefield, or in the shadows, or in the back alleys of the world, has become an art. You have developed the ability, through training and experience, to single out a target and strike them when they aren't expecting it. Using a dagger, or a short sword, or even a rapier, you have learned the best way to strike a foe when they are not aware of your approach.
If a target is incapacitated in any way, whether paralyzed or restrained or unconscious or maybe even they are simply asleep, your attack will be made with an advantage, and will count as a critical hit. In some situations, the target might simply be looking the other direction, perhaps fighting one of your allies. The DM may require a stealth check from you, to determine if the target becomes aware of your approach or not. Once you have struck a target, however, if they are still alive, they cannot be attacked again in this way.
