Book Of Schema (Complex Version) Image
Prerequisite: Requires an Intelligence score of 13 or higher At least three levels in the Artificer class

Whether you have years researching and reverse engineering magical machinery of advanced empires that rose and fell before or are a prodigy who uses intuition to solve problems in unexpected and groundbreaking ways to give magic permanence;  By breaking down the magic of an item you are able to read and produce schema, complex patterns that blueprint permanent magical items and devices and how to adapt them in part to produce temporary mechanisms on the fly. Your designs are written in a book, which you must have in hand to make use of them.

  • When you choose this feat, you acquire a book of schema holding two basic schemas and one major schema. Minor schema represents core concept designs for mechanisms and enchantments you build upon to engineer more complex devices. Minor schema allow for the creation of fleeting magic items you create and activate immediately after the ritual which in game terms are represented by spells you can cast as rituals. When you take this feat choose two 1st-level spells of your choice from the Artificer's spell list with the ritual tag to represent your first two minor schema.  You can design a new schema for any spell with the ritual tag on the Artificer Spell list by preparing it and spending 2 hours per level of the spell to design it. If you come across a consumable or magical item, including scrolls or items with finite charges, you might be able to determine at least in part how it was created and use the item as a guide to create a minor schema for any spell that item allows you to cast. To create a minor schema for a spell not on the Artificer spell list (or an Artificer spell of higher level than you can currently prepare) the spell's level can be no higher than one half your level (rounded up). The process designing it takes 2 hours per level of the spell, and costs 50 gp per level. Once you have created a minor schema for a spell you no longer have to have the spell prepared or have it on your spell list.  A schema used to cast a spell as a ritual which lacks the ritual tag automatically expends a spell slot of equal or greater level or fails. Your spellcasting ability for these spells is Intelligence regardless of whether or not the spell is on your spell list.
  • If you have all minor schema for a given magic item, the item in question has a finite number of uses/charges which it does not regain before being consumed, rendered inert or nonmagical, and grants no other benefit once all its charges have been consumed such as a scroll or potion then you have the knowledge necessary to reverse engineer it and create a greater schema, a design of semi permanence, after a long rest by breaking it down, prematurely rendering it non-magical with no effect, in a process known as reclaiming the item's essence. You gain a number of treasure points equal to that item's value in Xanathar's Guide to everything and can recreate that item by spending an equal amount of treasure points you have obtained in this way from any source in addition to 25% of that item's gp value in raw materials. If the item's charges have already been depleted through use, you must spend spell slots who's total level is equal to the number of missing charges multiplied by the lowest level spell level one of those charges can be expended to cast, or any treasure points you would have gained are lost,  consumed by the process of creating the Greater Schema.
  • All other magical items are the purview of major schema, designs for stable permanent enchantments or magic items capable of regenerating their full potency given time. The process for creating a major schema is identical to creating a greater schema though your character level determines if you are glean unraveling an item's mysteries. Use the following table to determine if you are capable of designing your own schema for the item in hand.
  • To represent your first major schema you learn the Replicate Magic Item infusion selecting from the options available at first level and can infuse one additional item. You can use an infusion slot to replicate any major schema you have obtained though doing so renders the oldest of any past your maximum nonmagical.

This feat is not at all intended to be balanced in compared to other 5E feats in as much as it is a vector to adapting a simplified version the 3E Craft Reserve, Item Creation Feats, and Salvaging magic essence abilities of that Artificer over to 5E
