This system is designed to simulate stealth mechanics and silent takedowns. These rules apply to both Player Characters (PCs) and monsters/creatures within the Chilling Tavern's campaign.
Phase 1: Infiltration
To attempt a silent takedown, a creature must meet all of the following conditions:
-
Cover/Obscured: The attacker must be hidden using appropriate cover or heavily obscured areas (e.g., bushes, dark corners, or behind walls).
-
Stealth Check vs. Perception: The attacker’s Dexterity (Stealth) check must exceed the target's Passive Perception (or active Wisdom (Perception) check).
-
Outside Line of Sight: The attacker must approach from behind or remain outside the target's line of sight. If within the target's field of vision, the attacker must wait until the target turns away.
Phase 2: Execution
- Once within attack range while the target is Unaware, the attacker can declare a silent takedown. The attack roll is made with Advantage. The outcome depends on who is executing the attack:
For Player Characters
When a player makes a silent takedown attack, make an attack roll (To Hit):
-
Equal to or Greater than AC: Instant Kill! The target is immediately and silently killed without calculating Hit Points (HP) damage. Nearby enemies who did not witness the kill remain unaware.
-
Less than AC: Failed Takedown! The attack deals Normal Damage only (as the target reacts in time or their armor protects them). All parties must roll Initiative to enter normal combat immediately.
For Monsters
When a monster successfully sneaks up on a PC and makes an attack roll:
-
Equal to or Greater than AC: Critical Damage! The PC immediately takes critical damage from the surprise attack. Roll Initiative to enter combat immediately.
-
Less than AC: Normal Damage / Miss. The attack deals normal damage or misses entirely. Roll Initiative to enter combat immediately.
Special Restrictions
-
Spotted: If a player is detected by any enemy before making the attack, the silent takedown system is canceled, and all parties must immediately roll Initiative for combat.
-
Instant Kill Immunity: Certain types of enemies cannot be instantly killed. If a player rolls equal to or greater than the AC against these targets, the result becomes a Critical Hit (Critical Damage) instead. Immune targets include:
-
Story-relevant Bosses or Elite enemies.
-
Creatures that are two or more sizes larger than the attacker (e.g., a Medium character attacking a Huge or Gargantuan creature).
-
Creatures without distinct anatomy or vital organs, such as Oozes or Elementals.
