You has absorbed an ocean of secondhand, half-verified information passed through gossip networks, town criers, tavern boards, and whatever the local equivalent of a rumor mill is. Once per long rest, when the party encounters a creature, location, or piece of lore you have no business knowing about, you can declare "wait, I heard something about this" and make an Intelligence (Investigation) check, DC set by the DM based on how obscure the info is (DC 10 for common knowledge dressed up as a secret, DC 15 for genuinely obscure stuff, DC 20 for stuff that borders on plot-critical). A mechanical excuse to metagame!
