The cowardly feat is a story-telling feat designed to bring a character's cowardly personality into actual combat. The coward in question will roll a d6 when rolling for initiative. Rolling a 4 or higher outputs a value of 0. Rolling a 3 outputs a value of 1, a 2 outputs a value of 2, and a 1 outputs a value of 3. When rolling for initiative, the player will subtract their cowardice output from their total initiative score.
During combat, the player will roll their cowardice die again at the start of each of their turns, subtracting the output from their initiative once again. This simulates hesitation in combat.
Should the roll place the player's initiative score below one or more other entities or players during combat (including an entity they are in 1-on-1 combat with!), their turn will be suspended until later in the round of combat based on their updated initiative score. This will repeat until combat is over, or until their initiative score reaches 0.
When a coward's initiative score reaches 0, they will begin to flee combat. The coward will flee in a straight line towards the nearest escape or exit. If leaving combat would require more movement than the coward's allotted movement speed, they will remain in flight until they have left the area of combat, taking as many turns as necessary to flee the area without being able to take an action or bonus action.
The coward can not reenter any form of combat until they have taken a short rest. In the event of a surprise attack, the coward will attempt to flee if they have not finished a short rest.
Fleeing will more than likely open up the coward to at least one opportunity attack. These operate as normal. When fleeing, if the coward is within reach of an opponent, the opponent will be granted an opportunity attack. As the coward will flee in a straight line, they do not have the luxury of avoiding opportunity attacks they create by running within reach of an opponent. Unless the coward is somehow incapacitated by one of these opportunity attacks, they will continue to flee.
