Black Oil (or regular Oil if the DM wishes to make it more accessible) has magical properties when used correctly. As an action, a spellcaster can pour 8oz (half a pound) of Black Oil onto their spellcasting focus. The oil catches fire in a swirl of purple, green, or another deep color of light. For 8 hours, or until the spellcaster gains the unconscious condition, the following system is in place:
The spellcaster gains Oil Dice equal to their maximum hit dice. They regain all expended Oil Dice at the beginning of their next turn. At the beginning of their turn, the spellcaster can distribute their Oil Dice to any (or all) of the following effects:
- Add the roll to the damage of a spell you cast this turn, with the type of the new damage being fire.
- Add half the roll to the DC of a spell you cast this turn (round up).
- Gain Temporary Hit Points equal to half the roll(round up).
When the effects of Black Oil Magic wear off. The following system activates:
When the spellcaster casts a spell that involves rolling dice, a number of Anti-Oil Dice are rolled depending on how many Oil Dice the spellcaster has used. The roll of these dice are added or subtracted in whatever way is against the spellcaster’s interests (decreasing the damage of an attack spell, adding to a target’s saving throw, or decreasing how much a healing spell heals a target, etc.). Additionally, the spellcaster may experience up to 3 side effects per short rest based on what stage of Oil Corruption they are in. They may attempt to oppose these side effects by making a DC 18 Saving throw. The ability for the throw is the same as the spellcaster's spellcasting ability. The possible side effects are listed below:
DM Instructions: When rolling Anti-Oil Dice, subtract the number of Anti-Oil Dice rolled from the number of Oil Dice the spellcaster has used. The DM chooses which 3 effects occur, but they are limited by what stage of corruption the spellcaster is in.
