Granted by the Volstrucker background
Happy people are never chosen for the Volstrucker. The Cerberus Assembly watches the empire's most gifted young mages for the ones who have already been broken, because a cracked mind is easier to reshape. When no tragedy is ready to hand, the order has been known to arrange one. Every agent carries the wound that opened the door, whether or not the awakening let them remember it truly.
Tragedy. Choose the loss that set you on the Volstrucker's path from the options below, or roll a d6 and take the matching one. The choice has no game effect of its own; it's the root of your story, and a thread your DM may pull.
| d6 | Tragedy |
|---|---|
| 1 | Familicide. Through lies and manipulation, the order convinced you that your family were traitors, and you killed them with your own hands. Only later, if ever, did you learn the truth. |
| 2 | Amnesia. You have no memory of the life before the Academy. Something took it from you, perhaps a fever, a blow, or a spell, and the order was glad to fill the empty space with a past of its own design. |
| 3 | Capture. You were taken prisoner by the Kryn Dynasty and held for months, questioned and hurt in the dark. You came home hollow and hungry for someone to blame, and the Assembly gave you one. |
| 4 | Starvation. You grew up in the empire's leanest corners, knowing hunger as a constant companion. The order offered you food, warmth and purpose, and asked only for everything else. |
| 5 | Disfigurement. An accident, a fire, or a deliberate cruelty left you scarred in a way people could not look past. In the order, no one needed to see your face, only the work you did. |
| 6 | Vicissitude. Your family once had wealth, a name and a future, and lost them all in a single turn of fortune. The order promised you a way to matter again, and you believed it. |
Builder note (D&D Beyond): each row of the table is also an option on this feat; pick yours from the options below the description.
