Prerequisite: Taught to you by a furnace hand or infirmary attendant who had no business teaching it, and you have said it once already, over someone you knew.

It is not in the Hymnal. It is not in anything. You say the name into the ash and the ash takes it, and that is the whole of the rite. Nothing answers. Nothing has ever answered. You gain the following benefits:

  • As an action, you can whisper the ash-name over a creature that died within the last minute, if you were present when it died. The body cannot be raised as undead, animated, inhabited, or made to serve as spawn or vessel. If it was a Sin-Plague creature, it cannot reform, split, or rise again.
  • As an action, you can speak it over a creature at 0 hit points within 5 feet of you. It stabilizes, and it is not frightened for as long as you keep speaking.
  • Creatures within 10 feet that can hear you have advantage on saving throws against being frightened for 1 minute afterward.

Drawback. You must have been there. No secondhand names, no lists, no reading them off a manifest — presence at the death or the words do nothing. And you keep them. At every long rest you must spend 10 minutes saying the names you have taken, in the order you took them; if you are prevented or you skip it, you gain no benefit from that rest. The list only gets longer. Anyone who recognizes the custom — furnace people, infirmary people, and certain clergy — knows it is unprinted, and if they report you it is worth 1 Heat.
