Prerequisite: You stood the Counting of the Unreturned on the Borrowed Night beside someone who keeps it, and you said your share aloud.

Tumuli has no liturgy. There is one exception, and it exists only where earth was denied — which is why the silence everywhere else is the point. You gain the following benefits:

  • You can spend 1 minute speaking the rite in a place where the dead lie unburied or were refused earth. For the next 8 hours, you and any allies who heard you cannot be frightened while in that place, and you all have advantage on saving throws against despair, madness, and possession there.
  • You sense, within 60 feet, where human remains lie that were never given earth — how many and roughly where, never who.
  • You have advantage on Wisdom checks and saving throws made to keep your composure in the presence of the unburied dead, including the Furnace dead.

Drawback. The words leave a mark where they are spoken, and the mark does not wash out until the Wet. Anyone who knows Tumuli’s doctrine can read it instantly: someone stood here, and they knew what this place is. It tells pursuers you passed. A Concord investigator who finds one treats the site as a confirmed unsanctioned interment and opens a file on it, which is how sites get sealed, scrubbed, and reassigned. Spoken anywhere the dead were properly given earth, the rite is only words.
