Through close companionship and training with your canine companion, you have developed a unique bond which results in an extra force of protection on the battlefield. Starting at level 1, if your canine companion is available and not incapacitated, when an enemy rolls a natural 1 on a melee attack roll against you and misses, your canine companion instead blocks the attack and retaliates against the enemy. This feature can only be used once per enemy, per round of combat. This is a free action, and does not use a reaction, action or bonus action.
At first level, the retaliate causes 1d4 piercing damage and occurs when an enemy rolls a 1 on an attack roll, and the result misses you. The damage and opportunity threshold increases at Level 3, 5, 8, 12, 15 18, and 20th level. See below for damage and threshold increases:
At 3rd: 1d6 and Attack Roll 2 (or less); 5th: 1d8 and Attack Roll 3 (or less); 8th 1d10 and Attack roll 4 (or less); 12th: 1d12 and Attack Roll 5 (or less); 15th 1d12 + Your Dexterity modifier and Attack Roll 6 (or less); 15th: 1d12+Dexterity modifier+ 1/2 proficiency modifier and Attack Roll 6 (or less); 18th: 1d12+Dex+Proficiency, Attack Roll of 7 (or less); 20th: 1d20+Dex+Proficiency, Attack roll of 8 (or less).
