You learn the intricacies of energy manipulation in regards to your preferred element.
Whenever you cast a spell that deals the chosen damage type, any creatures affected by the spell that have immunity instead have resistance to that damage type.
Once, when you cast a spell of 1st level or higher that deals damage of the chosen type, you may spend an additional spell slot to increase the damage of the spell. The damage increases by 2d6 per level, to a maximum of 10d6 additional damage with a 5th level spell slot.
