You are one of the surface folk forced to spent their life so far in the Underdark.
Perhaps you are slave of the Mindflayers, freshly escaped; perhaps you're free but live in one of the rugged hidden colonies of survivors far enough from the deadly denizens of the Deep. Either way, you have little in common with the surfacers whose heritage you share: You've only known perpetual night, the glow of bioluminescent flora (and occasional fauna), and the flickering light of fire that casts shadows upon walls and ridges. You've learned how to be quiet, oh so quiet, before you could walk. You've proven yourself to be a survivor time and time again, be it thanks to your good sense, your smarts, or your sturdiness.
