You've learned to use the versatility of certain weapons to your advantage, shifting between stances and grips to confound and unbalance your foes while defending yourself with parries and repositioning.
You gain the following benefit when wielding a versatile weapon in one hand with your other hand free. On your turn, before attacking with a melee weapon, you may choose to take a -5 penalty to the attack roll. If the attack hits, it deals bonus damage equal to your proficiency bonus and you may apply one of the following effects. Each effect can only occur once on your turn:
- Confound. The target has their speed reduced by 10ft until the end of their next turn.
- Unbalance. You may immediately make a grapple or shove attempt against the target as part of the attack. You gain advantage on the contested check.
You gain the following benefit when wielding a versatile weapon with two hands. On your turn, before attacking with a melee weapon, you may choose to take a -5 penalty to the attack roll. If the attack hits, it deals bonus damage equal to your proficiency bonus and you may apply one of the following effects. Each effect can only occur once on your turn:
- Parry. You gain a bonus to your AC equal to half of your proficiency bonus (rounded up) until the start of your next turn.
- Reposition. You may immediately use up to 10ft of your movement to retreat or reposition yourself after the attack. This movement does not provoke attacks of opportunity.
