Taking full advantage of the versatile nature of a weapon that can be wielded in one hand for more defense along with a shield or two hands for greater freedom of attack, you gain the following benefits:
- You can don or doff a shield as a bonus action.
- While wielding a weapon with the versatile property in one hand, when a creature within five feet of you hits you with a melee weapon attack, you can spend your reaction to force that creature to re-roll that attack, and they must use the new roll. If the new attack roll would miss you, you can make one attack with the weapon you're wielding in one hand as part of that reaction.
- While wielding a weapon with the versatile property with two hands, your AC increases by 1, and when you miss with an attack that you make with a weapon you're wielding with two hands, you can make one attack with that weapon as a bonus action.
