Arcane Linguist

Like many mages who've dedicated their life to studying the arcane, you've studied the languages which give shape to the magical energies of the world. While scribing a spell scroll, or casting a spell, make an Arcana check DC 10 + twice the spell's level, you can then change certain properties such as duration, range, area of effect, or upscaling the damage/effect in one of the following ways:

• Duration: Extend the duration of a spell by up to thrice its original duration (max 24 hours). You must be concentrating on the modified spell for the full duration.
• Range: Extend the range of the spell up to thrice its original distance (but not beyond your current plane of existence).
• Area of Effect: Expand the area of effect up to thrice its original area (max 500 ft cube).
• Upscaling Damage/Effect: Cast an upscaled version of the spell (max 9th level) with a successful Arcana check equal to 10 + twice the spell level of the upscaled version. Or, at the DM's discretion, change the desired effect of the spell, including damage type, saving throw, or increased damage (increasing die type used by one, i.e. increase d4 to d6).

Failing the Arcana check to modify the spell can have dire consequences. Although the extent of the consequences are left up to your DM, it's recommend that they draw inspiration from one of the following tables: Wild Magic Surge, Retributive Strike, or Potion Mishaps.
