Fate Points are there to give the player a little control over how good their die rolls are – to make them more likely to succeed at heroic or dramatically appropriate times. A character has points equal to their level. This total is reset every time a character gains a level, so you can’t hoard them over the course of many levels.

  • A player can spend a fate point whenever they make an attack roll, an ability check, or a saving throw. The player can spend the fate point after the roll is made but before the outcome is determined. Spending the fate point allows the player to roll a d6 and add it to the d20, possibly turning a failure into a success. A player can spend only 1 fate point per roll.
  • If a player is not given time to spend their fate point before the outcome is known, they can spend it after the results are applied. The player is then expected to narrate the event that turns the failure into success.
  • A player can spend a fate point on a Death Saving Throw to succeed.
