This 1st-level feature replaces the Favored Enemy feature and works with the Foe Slayer feature. You gain no benefit from the replaced feature and don't qualify for anything in game that requires it.
Beginning at 1st level, you can call upon your bond with nature to mark a creature as your favored enemy for a time: you know the Hunter's Mark spell, and Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for it. You can cast this spell without expending a spell slot a number of times equal to half of your proficiency bonus (rounded down). You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
When you gain the Spellcasting feature at 2nd level, it doesn't count against the number of ranger spells you know.
Additionally, when you reach certain levels in this class, the spell gains the following benefits: at 6th level you no longer have to concentrate on Hunter's Mark, at 14th level the damage die of Hunter's Mark increases to 1d8.
