Common Sign

You are deaf, partially deaf, mute or grew up around deaf people who use “Common Sign” as their primary communication language, and thus communicate using it fluently yourself.

You are proficient in this language, and are capable of communicating fluently with other deaf, or Common Sign using PCs and NPCs.

By extension, you are also capable of teaching some basic useful signs and phrases to up to 1d4 other players (if they are willing) over a number of short rest periods and or downtime. The other person will need to succeed on 3d4 DC10 Wis, Dex or Int rolls (their choice). This allows you and your successful “student/s” to communicate simple sentences in silence, and up to 30ft away, in any environment where you can see each other clearly.

Common Sign is related only to the language of Common. Sign Language in other cultures may share some “obvious signs”, but will no doubt use unique signs of their own. You can with this feat, however, attempt to discern the meaning of sign language from another culture with an Int or Wis roll of DC15, in order to understand some basic elements of what was communicated.

Common Sign is a physical visual communication language only, and does not exist in a unique written form (standard common would be used).

It cannot be used effectively in total or magical darkness, and may be subject to disadvantage in low light, when using darkvision etc
