Through intense study or endless practice, you have managed an incredible feat of magical ability. You’ve taken an affinity to a certain magical element, learning how to harness and control it at will. As well, this newfound control over your magical affinity has allowed you to find ways to combine your magic with someone else, amplifying spells either with your magical affinity, or powering up your own spells by using the magical ability of someone else. New spells could be discovered with this knowledge, and already common spells could be made much more powerful, simply by Linking with another spellcaster. Magic, more so than ever, is firmly in your hands.
When this feat is first taken, choose one from the following damage types: Acid, Lightning, Fire, Cold, Poison
This choice will determine your magical affinity. Once chosen, this damage type may not be changed, and a cosmetic effect of your choice now shows your magical affinity on your body.
Linked Spellcasting allows the caster to link with another spellcaster (even one without this feat), to amplify a spell. This is done by both casters making a physical link to one another, allowing the Link Caster to channel their power through their ally and add their affinity to their spell, or to allow the non-Link Caster to add their magical ability to the Link Caster’s spell. (Both casters must be within 5ft of one another in order to cast a linked spell. The most common method for casting a linked spell would be for one caster to ready their action to cast and wait for the other caster to Link with them, and then both consume their actions at the same time.)
This ability would allow the Link Caster to add their magical affinity damage to their ally’s spell cast, dealing the same amount of dice damage as the spell with their own affinity (Acid, Lightning, Fire, Cold, Poison), +1 extra die. If the Link Caster instead links with an ally and casts their own spell, it would double the dice of the spell being cast, +1 die from the Link. Both types of Links would consume both caster’s spell slot of the level of the spell being cast. If one caster does not have enough spell slots of the required level, the Link will fail automatically and the spell being cast will not benefit from the Link or the Link Caster’s affinity. Additionally, only the caster initiating the spell needs to have the spell prepared or learned, the other caster is simply amplifying the spell, not casting it themselves.
If two Link Casters attempt to cast together, only one Link may be established at a time.
This feat scales based on level, dealing +1 die at 1st level, +2 dice at 5th level, +4 dice at 11th level, and +6 dice at 18th level.
Note: This feat cannot benefit non-magical damage. If a spell deals non-magical damage (bludgeoning, piercing, slashing), the Link will not add additional damage to it.
Example turn: A Level 3 non-Link spellcaster readies an action to cast Ice Knife. The Link Caster, lightning affinity and also level 3, would move within 5ft of the ally, creating the Link. At that point, both casters would consume their action, and the Ice Knife spell would cast as normal. When it explodes and deals 2d6 cold damage, it will also deal 3d6 lightning damage, benefiting from the Link Caster’s affinity by doubling the damage as well as benefiting from the bonus +1 die from the Link itself.
