So as the title says i am trying to decide which subclass to take on my artificer. The Dm is running a few different campaigns and they are all interconnected, the only other person who will be playing with me regularly is playing a tanky paladin. Playing on thursday. Stats STR 8 DEX 14 CON 16 INT 17 WIS 10 CHA 8
Battle Smith will give you a nice companion with decent hit points to take some hit points, also dealing a good amount of damage, and able to give attacks against you at disadvantage. You can also use your steel defender as a mount if you are a halfling, goblin, kobold, or gnome. You also get Shield, which increases your survivability a lot, and you can use intelligence for magic weapons, so when combined with your infusions, you can be very good at any type of weapon you like, melee or ranged.
Artillerist is also good, it is better at blasting, but not as good at surviving as Battle Smiths. Their spell list is really good, and their turrets are great, but they aren't as flexible as Battle Smiths either.
Alchemists are the worst of the three, don't choose it.
I recommend Battle Smith, but Artillerist is a close second.
