I'm planning out a gnome artificer and am looking for some input. At level 3 he'll be a battlesmith and I'm kind of mixed as to what to do at level 4.
My original plan was to take magic initiate, so that I could have a couple extra cantrips and grab find familiar. I'd put mending on the feat, since I'll always want it, and likely take booming blade as well.
However, I've been noticing that I might want to just take a level or two in wizard. Just one level would put give me an extra cantrip, a lot more spells, and even put me ahead on spell slots for an artificer. If I take a second level, I'd likely go for Graviturgy. Being able to half or double the weight of an object at will feels oddly fitting for an artificer.
I've never really made a multiclass character, so I was hoping for some guidance here. Does a level 2 wizard make sense for an artificer? If I take a second level, should I do so right away or wait until later? What other wizard subclasses could make sense for an artificer? These are the sorts of questions I'm wondering about.
I would not do Wizard dip, as it doesn't give you a ton, and would take away from the progression of your Steel Defender. If you don't care about that, I say, go ahead, take wizard.
Also, if you are sure that you want to multiclass, I would recommend keeping in Artificer until level 5 (to get the Extra Attack, higher spell slots, and ASI).
If you were to do this dip, I wouldn't recommend Graviturgy. I would recommend Bladesinger. If you do this, I would actually recommend going more Wizard than Artificer with the Wizard up to level 17, and Artificer only level 3.

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
I have a level 8 Battle Smith who did MI:W to get the SCAG cantrips and I wish I'd dipped instead for 2 levels of wizard. (not really keen on the artificer features past level 11)
