Hey guys first time posting here. I've been prepping the Stranger Things starter module and have been 3D printing the minis we will need. I found a really great Hydra but could find a Thessalhydra. Does anyone know of an stl file for this?
This is what I found so I printed it and painted it up. I think it might be close enough but would like to have an exact match.
Hi, I'm looking for a Thessalhydra too, have you been lucky and find one? Where do you find that Hydra STL, because in thingiverse there isn't too much small hydras like yours
Its unfortunately ridiculous how the new generations will not even have the right ideas for mythical creatures because of those shows who do not have the rights to WotC monsters...
much like how everyone now thinks a 3 headed dog is cool but they never knew who cerberus is because of harry potter. stranger thing is doing the same thing... new people think demogorgon is a plant now...
that said, the mini looks really cool for an hydra. i like it.
i am quite sure the thesselhydra from WotC has already been printed and can be bought., so... i could be wrong, i haven't checked recently.

The thesselhydra was actually a wierd 2e version of a Hydra with lamprey mouth in between its heads. Stranger Things is set in the 80's so they used AD&D monsters.
stranger thing is a work of fiction and the monsters from d&d cannot be used for stranger things. Because d&d is not an open source thing. thus they changed all the monsters including demogorgon who doesn't even remotely look like that. this is where the guy leads to, while i do agree that any good old hydra would work for any monster type, there is something to having the exact replica of the monster.
they definitley should put out a set of miniatures for that adventure.

Demogorgon looked like that in the 80's and I have an AD&D monster manual that describes the Thesselhydra. If WoTC allowed a Stranger Things adventure then they would allow use of the Thesselydra. If you mean the demogorgon in the adventure you must not have actually watched the show.
i watched the show but unlike people who got stuck to the dungeon and dragon references... i actually hated the show, for the same reason i hated harry potter, and thats for the bad representation of the mythos of the said monsters. but if you think wotc had anything to do with the stranger things series, you are wrong, they never askjed any permission and thus couldn't use any of the monsters. saying a name is one thing, using a representation is against the laws of the copyrights. thats why the demogorgon of th emovie became a plant like creature, and no i have still my 2E monster manual, i even have my 1e books still... demogorgon never ever looked like that. you have to understand that names cannot really be copyrighted, thus anybody can call one thing c'thulu or demogorgon, but the images cannot be identical, the same is true for anything word wise, you can copyright a paragraph, but not a single word. otherwise everything you'd do or say would be infringing and no new content would ever be printed anywhere.
the stranger thing adventure is different from the seires, mainly because it is designed by WotC itself, "THEY" got the liscensing to do that. thats why they could take on a form of the thessel hydra. but if you ever look at your miniature and the actual images.. you'd see its not the same picture at all. wotc do not mix and mash their own universe with others. thats the goal of calling it a multiverse to being with.
again... each book as had their own minitures as they are printed, so stranger things shouldn'T be an exception, the only reason that could make it not hapenning, is if its not WotC doing and the other company do not want to print monsters. exemple of critical role with its wildmount book, there was no miniatures for that book yet it was released by wotc. that doesn'T mean its part of wotc lineup. it only means wotc was interested in making the book happen. miniature wise its up to the other company to deal with it.
do you really think it even look close to the plant like creature we've seen it to be ? again int he series, you dont see any of the books, they only refer to them. thats to avoid copyright laws.

"Demogorgon looked like that in the 80s" I assume the OP is referring to the figurine in episode 1. Not the plant monster.
Its amusing to me that you clearly understand the how ridiculous it is to try and micromanage minute details (if you copyright words, no new content would ever be created) while simultaneously expressing hatred for anyone tries to breath new life into old ideas. D&D was exactly the right amount of dramatic license to perfect "the mythos" and preserve "The right ideas for mythical creatures" but Harry Potter and Stranger Things are a bridge too far, huh?
@OP I've been looking too, Im in the process of trying to cob one together in blender from Miguel's existing models. Im gonna slice the mouth off an aboleth, stick hydra heads around the rim, slap that on to a quadruped body and add a Glabrezu hand to its tail. If the result is passable, I'll post a link to it here.
sad little kingdom you live in, when cerberus has become a deity of immense power that protects the gate of hell to a simple dog that just want to be petted by pretty much anyone who passes in front of him... i barely ever would consider that to be anything...
just saying... stranger thing couldn'T use demogorgon because of copyright. it belongs to WotC. harry potter, sorry but greek mythology is not belonging to anybody, so she could use the name, she could use the mythos entirely, but decided to just stop at usingonly the visual and just ditching everything else. another thing... uwe boll... alone int he dark... yeah great portrayal of the games... i mean thats exactly what he did... took the name ditched everything else...i could go further and bring twilight into this mix. but for the sake of argument, i'll only say... its normal to want to change whats bad, but changing everything and keeping the name is stupid. there are differences between using something because its cool, but its another to make it entirely something else then say it is what it is.
as for stranger things... well they could even have talked about c'thulu if they so wanted too... but never could they ever use any imaging from him. they couldn'T show anything. because there are copyrights in effects. thats wy you never saw demogorgon in that episode. menitonning it is one thing, showing him is another. thats also why it became a plant like creature when they wanted to represent him in the movie. because they couldn't use any of the WotC representation without breaking copyright.
the same applies here, they can't have minis if wotc doesn't want to. if they wanted to make their own... they would need it to be something else entirely. want proof of that... just look at paizo pathfinder creatures, they are named differently, they are even visually different then d&d yet we can know easily which monster they are. reason being, paizo cannot use d&d stuff.
again, if the OP wants a thessel hydra, which would be great if wotc ever was going to do it. but otherwise from a stranger thing perspective, i think he'll need to do it himself. i dont think wotc will ever give the right to that one. the same for demo gorgone, they'd need to use the plant one.

It would make sense for the kids in Stranger Things who, the night Will was captured, were fighting a Demogorgon in their game, to adopt the name of the monster for this otherworldly creature that just appeared. Similar reason why they call the creature from S2 a Mindflayer. It was an apt description for what they were dealing with.

you see that's my problem with people thinking stranger things is cool just because of D&D and others just saying they love it cause of references...
i know fully well what their goal was... but honestly... its the same for the vampires from twilight. and yes i am considering it like that. thing is, yes you can say the names... but you can't use the monsters and thus you have no choice but to change the creature. but that only separate the people more into the lore. those who loved d&d and know these monsters knows its not really them... but then you get people into the hobby and they think a demogorgon is a plant like monster. the same way kids these days do not even know who the king of pop is. the same way many person think some movies are original when they are remake of a remake of an old movie of the 1950. this is how you take away peoples mind... this is how you destroy others stories for the sake of yours...
and now i have players in my games saying things like "oh you mean the plant thing" or "oh you mean like that character from that game" or "that character from that movie"... which prompt me to just stop wanting to be a DM because i hate my stuff being compared to other things and then them calling it that way instead of the way i intended it.
but that's just me... i just hate seeing cultures getting shot down by by third parties who think they can do better by just changing a name.

Hey thanks - wow I lost track of this post. I never did end up playing that game at least not yet and was recently revisiting the idea of the thessalhydra. I'm gonna check out your stl file, thanks for the work you did on that. As for the rest of this thread veering off into a copyright and mythical purity rant well I guess some people aren't happy unless they are unhappy about something. Cheers - Scott
by the way... i was not answering the OP, which has done amazing work on his miniatures... but the other guy who asked if he had found anything about the thesselhydra... which he obviously wouldn'T find anything except homebrews, because copyrights forces people into doing it themselves...

Just nerding out for fun here: Cerberus isn't actually the name of "three headed dogs" like how Gorgon is the name for monster women with snake hair. Cerberus is the name of one specific three headed dog the way Medusa is the name of the one specific gorgon. Kerberus means Spotted... like a spotted cheetah. As far as I know, he's the only one of his kind that we still have reference to. Greek myth is full of that stuff. Pegasus has a brother named Golden Sword... who might be a dude with a sword... or a boar. Y'know, same thing. There's only one hydra, but it's the Hydra from Lyrnia, to keep it from getting confused with other hydras we don't know about. That sort of thing.
Heck, most of us know Alcaeus by the name, "The Guy Hera Hates", but in Latin, i.e. Hercules / Heracles. And yes, he changed his name from Alcaeus to, "The Guy Hera Hates" to make her hate him less, because everyone knows that at least one Olympian hates him and making friends with him might put them at risk.
Long story short: Fluffy is a great name for a Skylostriakefalon (take that Hecatonchires).
