A small, simple whiteboard will work just fine if you attach some small hooks to the back of it. Easy to pick up and adjust any numbers that you need to too!
As an alternative idea you could use the count down method for keeping track of initiative. If you do this, creating some "auction style" initiative wands and keeping some dry erase makers around is a fun way to keep people involved. The way I heard it described, and the way I intend to make them is by cutting out some paper circles, laminating them, and then attaching them to popsicle sticks. When your players roll initiative have them write it down on their wands. Then just play as normal.
I use some cardboard tokens and have one of the players in charge of them for me.
There is a token with each character name on, then three others "Boss" "Minions" and "Special"
When initiative is rolled at the start of an encounter, she puts the token in order and it makes it really easy for everyone at the table to see what the order is.
I'm looking for some good party and creature trackers to hang on my DM screen! Lemme know whatcha got! 😊

Hope this helps!
