I picked up a Troll, 2 bugbears, and 2 Ilithid for less than $17.00 at my local gaming shop. For the minis crowd you know that's a pretty darn good price for 5 pieces (one of them being a large model).
I hope Wizkids keeps up with this unpainted line!

Their digital models and color renders make them look excellent, but that's not really indicative of how well that excellent digital mold translates to actual miniature.
The detail is fantastic. Seam lines? Barely noticeable. I didn't have to break out my exacto to trim anything. The actual models look just about as good as the 3D models on their site. Definitely going to pick up a few more this weekend. I'll post pics when I get the chance... just keep in mind I'm crap at painting them.

Just picked up quite a few today and I'm quite impressed by the quality of the minis they have though I wish the selection was larger.
I just started a campaign with people who have never played before and this is my first time trying to DM so I figured that minis would make it easier for them to visualize since they were having a rough time of it. We're going through Tyranny of Dragons and I would kill for a bulk mini pack that goes along with the campaign that has the creatures and characters. The boosters really don't cut it to get the figures that you need. Hopefully Wizkids comes keeps coming out with new minis but I feel like this was a big oversight from Wizards that could have made them a lot of money.
I get the frustration. I'd love to see a bulk pack produced for the various campaign books too. Check on Ebay. Sometimes people offload full lots of painted minis pretty cheaply. Also check Reaper to see if they have another Kickstarter going. I got hundreds of minis for $80.00 on their first kickstarter, granted it took well over a year to get them... And then there are printable monster tokens. I know wizards has done those for previous editions, not sure about 5e but someone probably has a license to make them.

It's a bit of the opposite, rather -- randomized boosters generate more money than prepackaged. This is both from a perspective of people who spend a bunch on boosters until they get what they want, and also because it lets them seed in some minis that wouldn't sell very well at all by themselves. By doing a mix of dead-simple minis with super complex ones, with a skew towards producing more dead-simple ones, the per-unit cost of the complex ones get amortized by the bulk production of the others. So, you can afford to get a rare mini with a detailed sculpt and paint job in a booster with a handful of other minis for $15 whereas if it was produced and sold single (without the bulk to amortize it), the mini may go for $30-40 instead. This will drive down sales due to the high price, and increase WotC's profit margin on a per-unit basis.
See if this works. It should be the in progress Troll. Forgive my lack of skill if the link works. If not, just imagine the most amazing paint job you've ever seen on a mini.

I know. I would just like to have the same skill with painting that I have with pen and ink drawing haha.
Also, I just picked up a couple more Mindflayers, and I noticed that this pair wasn't as detailed as the first. So I'm not sure if the primer on these two is thicker, or if the set came out of a well used mold. But still they are pretty detailed. I shoulda taken a pic of them pre-paint so I could show the detail. But I do have a set of vampires (one I will be using for Strahd) that I haven't painted yet. I'll get that up to show if my iphone can get a clear shot.

I noticed that in this version they are somewhat less cartoony and bombastic than they were in the old 3.5 versions. I'll have to paint my Nelzur's bugbears up to see what they are like.
The level of detail on these, and the price point which is completely shocking to me because of how good it is, have convinced me I need to swing by my FLGS sometime soon and see if they've got a few sitting around (and tell them to get a few sitting around if they don't).
As a mid tier painter the pre priming is amazing. It's such a time saver! The mold line situation seems to be pretty minor. A good set of $8 files will help you out.
It seems like the only issue they had with these is maybe a scale issue? Some of the minis seem to be way smaller and lack some detail that was on the digital renders. It's really obvious with the familiars pack. But they still paint up nicely and I think they are a really nice value. Someone else mentioned that the gargoyles seemed weirdly small and that is probably a scale issue since they are supposed to be medium creatures.
But for the price point on this line (for minis that are traditionally expensive) is excellent. Obviously Mind Flayer minis are harder to come by and people are grabbing up those! And frankly that is what wizkids and WotC need to do. Keep on providing non random versions of commonly used minis that people have been having trouble finding for years. This line will only improve in time and the head of Wizkids, Justin Ziran, used to work on the Chainmail Miniatures line which is my favorite.

If sales go down and WotC loses money because of it they will lower the price of the mini's to maximize profit. At the point they can't make mini's that cheap they will simply not produce them.
Wizkids is not Wizards of The Coast. The miniatures are Official D&D miniatures because Wizkids was able to obtain a licensing agreement from WotC. Wizards won't lose anything. Sort of like how Curse has partnered with Wizards for this site. They have been doing the smart thing and licensing out the work they want to people who are good at what they do.

Certainly looks like a troll to me.
And don't get down on yourself about lack of skill; everybody starts somewhere, and it'd be a total fluke if anybody ever started actually skilled.

Here's one of the unpainted Bugbears I picked up last week so you can see detail.

I did a size comparison video for a bunch of these if people didn't already know. https://youtu.be/39pyDMqFCLo
What brand files do you use?
I just have a set of Army Painter files. Nothing special.
Unless you know where to get a nice pair of modeling files I think most of the war gaming files are going to be roughly the same quality at around $8.
If anyone has gotten a really good set somewhere please give a shout out.
