Just saw how cool it would be to have pilfered the Armor of Agathys spell and Invulnerability spell using Magical secrets. Running around provoking opportunity attacks or slugging blows out with a bad guy without fear of being damaged and dishing it out for free.
A person gives up casting foresight to do that, so I find it a hard sell, tbh. If you pick up find steed or find greater steed you can share those spells with the steed too.
Yeah I'm playing a Paladin/Bard around level 13 now, and upcasting Aid and Armor of Agathys on yourself also makes your steed viable. Instead of having a 19HP warhorse that gets one-shot by everything, it suddenly has 70+ hp and does 25 cold damage to things that attack it.
I am using aid and find greater steed. Great combo.
Armor of agathys is on my list for the next set of secrets.
Duel wielding bards can do okay with spirit shroud. Haste is great for 1 handed. Spirit guardians is great for the passive damage if you are close to everyone.
Tenser's Transformation is not too shabby...advantage on attack rolls...bonus force damage...movement speed (which would stack with Sword Bards already using the Attack action)...
Tasha's Otherworldly Transformation is the upgraded Tenser's Transformation...but with some immunities to damage, and a flight speed. Always useful.
Less chosen; but equally useful: Shadow of Moil.
You become engulfed in shadows (think Emily Kaldwin from "Dishonored 2")...and these shadows "heavily obscure" you to enemies.
This means that attack rolls against you have disadvantage, and enemy spellcasters will have trouble targeting you.
On top of that, you get resistance to radiant damage (situational, but hey)...and anyone who gets too close gets lashed out with necrotic damage.
Pretty decent for a melee build.
