One of the PCs in my game took the Magic Initiate feat at Level 4 and started to choose spells and it just lets them add an infinite number! Dndbeyond fam help me please!
It's possible they're using someone's incorrectly-made homebrew. Look at the feat under 'Features & Traits' - if it says PHB next to the feat, it's the actual feat, which shouldn't do this. If it has nothing next to the feat name, it's a homebrew version.
Also, just confirming that it's Magic Initiate, and not Ritual Caster, which does let you pick more than 3 spells.
Yeah, but then you can continue to add more spells to your ritual book as you progress throughout the campaign, and the feat is set up to allow you to do that. The system's not smart enough to know if you just got the feat, or if you're building, say, a level 10 character for a one-shot who got the feat at level 4 and has been obtaining additional spells for 6 levels. So it trusts you to fill it out correctly, and just provides you from the get-go the means to keep filling it out as you progress.

Omg your right I mis-spoke! It’s the ritual caster feat that has been messing up…
it says in the description of the feat you “acquire a ritual book with Two level spells”

Yup, the rules are presented within the feat, but the player needs to read them and follow them. 😊
