TL;DR My active subscription with unlimited slots locked all my characters because my active account... wasn't active and I somewhow exceeded unlimited (15 characters). The only way to fix was to deactivate all my characters on the web page.
When clicking on them (on the app), I was told
"SUBSCRIPTION EXPIRED
You need to determine which 0 characters you would like to use. Go to the DDB website and pick characters there."
On the same app, it also showed my master tier subscription as active (started June 20th 2023, active until June 20th 2024), with it, unlimited slots.
On the website, at character selection:
"Character Slots Exceeded
Your current D&D Beyond Membership is: MASTER ( slots). To continue, select up to unlimitedcharacters to activate. Your other characters will be deactivated until you restore them by deleting an active character to free up a slot, or by adding more slots with a D&D Beyond Subscription"
Activating was NOT an option, but "click to deactivate" was. Clicking to deactivate, antithetically, activated them.
I am also having this problem right now. It at first said I have a free subscription, which I don't as I have the master subscription but now it reads the same as you

A little frustrated as we have a session today but I cannot access anything. My character sheets are also greyed out on both my phones
I found that for some reason my account was not tied to the google account that had my master level subscription. I had to unassociated my account with the google account it had attached and attached the correct one and I got back my subscription benefits.

Yeah, you need to, on that page, deactivate your characters.
Yes, I know, but if you hit the "click to deactivate" it turns to "click to activate" which you WON'T click again.
Save it and your characters will be available.
It took me about an hour of troubleshooting to decide to try deactivating them all... and another try ignoring the new "click to activate".
Thank you so much for your help! That did the trick

All of my characters and purchases are GONE. Anyone having this issue?
