I'm guessing the code is wrong - it seems like you created the list directly with HTML instead of the editor, since the editor does not support nested lists. Or it confused with your editor uses and has put wrong HTML in it. Either way, check the code used or re-try without the nested/indented lists.
The editor is fussy and will try to insert it's own formatting, so sometimes it can bug out when you try to do anything more than basic stuff. If the formatting is necessary it is better to use Google Docs and set sharing to anyone with link can read, then share the link in the campaign Notes.

You were right in that it was some piece of HTML pasted but not from any editor but rather from the website.
I copied some captions from the character creation page and that apparently brought in with it some extra HTML elements (labels) and CSS "classes" that were not intended.
After I edited the HTML inside the editor I was able to fix it.
I would assume this would be removed when you "clear formatting" using the editor but it seems to not have done so.

I have edited my campaign notes (see image linked below) but they are not properly displayed after saving (see image linked below).
Trying clearing format and checking spacing but nothing I can do helps.
