One of my players just got a Ring of Protection, and it appears that equipping the item grants +1 to AC, and then an additional +1 to AC when attuning. We've worked around it by removing the AC bonus in the AC submenu in his character page, but I wanted to bring this up to be cleaned up when dev can get to it.
I just double-checked the stats of the Ring of Protection on D&D Beyond, as well as testing it out on one of my characters and it functions correctly for me. It only adds the bonuses once it is attuned.
Is it possible that your player has equipped a homebrew version of the Ring somehow?
It may have been created by them, or by another player, as homebrew content is shared within a campaign.

Thanks, Stormknight!
That's exactly what it was. I deleted the ring and added the official one and it seems to work. Sorry for taking up your time!
