Not sure if it's been touched on already but earlier this year I bought the PHB and was wondering whether I was able to redeem some sorta key to have access to its contents online?

Moved from General to Support
I have moved your post to the support forum, as that's the place for posts asking for assistance or information. With regards your question - there is no way to redeem physical purchases to access digital content on D&D Beyond, sorry!
That said, the team at D&D Beyond understand and want to make it as easy as possible to access the content you need.
If you're looking to build a specific character, you can purchase just the race/class that you need for that character for only a few dollars on the marketplace. If you later decide to upgrade your purchase to the full rulebook that it came from, you don't lose out - the amount paid for the race/class is deducted from the cost of purchasing the whole book.
You are also able to use the homebrew tools at no cost - absolutely free! If you wish to enter information from your purchased physical books, then go right ahead and do so - you're welcome to use the tools and create that content for your own use (or those you share with in a campaign). The only thing we ask is that you don't publish homebrew of the content from the D&D books - that's an infringement of copyright and will be reported and removed.
There's a good post on the purchasing the different content on D&D Beyond by one of our users here.

Additionally, there is an FAQ post here.
