making a variant human rogue and trying to take my feat for being a variant human but the only one that appears in the drop down is firearm specialist which I don't want/need
Most of the official feats can be found in the Player's Handbook and can be unlocked by purchasing that content, or by purchasing just the feat you want for your character. If you decide later to purchase the full Player's Handbook, the cost of any partial content will be discounted from the price.
so i would have to buy a PHB on the site to use the character creator?
You could buy just the feat or feats you want instead of thr whole book.
If another user in your campaign already bought the book, you (or another user) can buy a master subscription and enable content sharing on the campaign.

You can use the free content without buying anything. If you want the PHB stuff, then yes, you have to buy the PHB.

You can also homebrew most of the content. Replicating published content as homebrew is OK as long as you don’t publish it.
