I'm still fairly new to Dungeons and Dragons, but my friend pointed me towards the Artificer class and I really like it. My question is more about the nature of UA content itself. How long does it stay as play test material before it gets discarded or added to a book? I'm kind of running under the impression it's more of a beta test for a new class in this case, and they will either flesh it out into something they put out officially, or it'll fall off. I've done a little research into past content, but I'm still new enough that I thought you guys might be able to give me a better answer.

I'd say around 4-10 months is average for something to be released on UA before being included in a published sourcebook.
Other times, the UA content may be deemed to need further work, or not worth continuing, so there will either be a further UA release, or nothing.
If you create a character on D&D Beyond using the UA Artificer, even if it is then included in a published sourcebook, you can continue to play that character - it just won't be possible for anyone to create new characters using the UA class, once it is formally published.

I hope that makes sense!
