Well you didn't say where the typo could be found and the first place I looked had this:
When a crimson rite is activated, you suffer damage equal to your character level, and you reduce your maximum hit points by an amount equal to your character level.
Second place I looked (character sheet features and traits):
You take damage equal to and your max HP are reduced by -18 until the rite fades.
My character level was 18. Wording could use some cleaning up, but the meaning is clear. Looks like the value you are looking for was only 4 words past where you stopped quoting.

I didn't know that number changed, I've only made 1 blood hunter before. Good to know, but the wording definitely needs to be rectified.
If you click on the feature the side bar has the full description. The character builder also has the full description. The snippet text is the only part that doesn't explain itself, but it only supposed to be a reminder not the details (all the other places have the details).
Yes, I was a bit hasty to ask for help finding it, however I do believe the snippet should be adjusted. Maybe that will come with the updates to Blood Hunter
