Howdy fellow Artificer nerds! Isn't this class freaking awesome? Brainstorm with me...
My Gnome Battle Smith has made it to 6th level, and has found himself and his party in an underwater adventure...Infusions have been adjusted accordingly, as has spell lists. I'm rocking Cloak of the Manta Ray, no regrets but in the combat environment we find ourselves, my Steel Defender with 1/2 speed marching along the bottom of the sea is less than helpful. Talked to my DM, I'll be crafting Rings of Swimming for the party using Xan's rules (if we ever get down time) but what other cool things can I pitch to my DM to craft for the party? And my previously mounted combat build is out the window, unless I can scheme how to make it work out-swimming the poor guy.
And am I alone in wondering if there is any way to make nets useful in 5E? Might just be previous editions blurred in my old brain, but I remember nets being a thing. Any experience with underwater adventuring? Tips? Tricks? Thanks for any ideas!
If you have a wizard with floating disk, they can put the SD on the disk. It will follow 20 feet behind them no matter what, so if the wizard has a swim speed or uses Alter Self to get one, the disk will keep up.
Not so much for the party, but if you are going through the trouble of revising spell lists and infusions, it should be more than reasonable to modify the SD's legs to be sea-legs (fins) instead.
As for nets... I believe the only way would be to take the Crossbow Expert feat to negate the close range penalty. Or, like I do, scheme with your DM to homebrew a netgun or something that holds the same effects, but not a traditional net. Something like a powered-down version of the spell Web, maybe?
