A few posts I've read here all suggest that the 5th level Arcane Firearm Feature works with firebolt and the like.
Arcane Firearm
5th-level Artillerist feature
You know how to turn a wand, staff, or rod into an arcane firearm, a conduit for your destructive spells. When you finish a long rest, you can use woodcarver’s tools to carve special sigils into a wand, staff, or rod and thereby turn it into your arcane firearm. The sigils disappear from the object if you later carve them on a different item. The sigils otherwise last indefinitely.
You can use your arcane firearm as a spellcasting focus for your artificer spells. When you cast an artificer spell through the firearm, roll a d8, and you gain a bonus to one of the spell’s damage rolls equal to the number rolled.
As I'm reading things, arcane focuses replace the non-costed material components of a spell, and are interchangeable with component pouches. So does that men that Arcane Firearm, RAW only works with spells that require a material component?
For Artificers, all their Artificer spells require a material component (either artisan tool, thieves tools, or one of your infused items)! So it applies to all your Artificer spells :D
Tools Required
You produce your artificer spell effects through your tools. You must have a spellcasting focus—specifically thieves’ tools or some kind of artisan’s tool—in hand when you cast any spell with this Spellcasting feature (meaning the spell has an ‘M’ component when you cast it). You must be proficient with the tool to use it in this way. See chapter 5, “Equipment,” in the Player’s Handbook for descriptions of these tools.
After you gain the Infuse Item feature at 2nd level, you can also use any item bearing one of your infusions as a spellcasting focus.

Thanks folks. That makes a whole load more sense. A follow on then -
Enhanced arcane focus, can't (in DDB) be applied to thieves tools (or any other tools) only Rod / Staff / Wand. So does that basically make the tool use only relevant at level 1, if you are using an infusion on your own items?
Tool use as a focus is sub-optimal for an Artillerist at level 5. I wouldn’t say it’s not relevant, as circumstances may occur where that rod / staff / wand isn’t handy.

To you, an Artillerist, yes. Though Enhanced Arcane Focus is also useful if you have a party member who's a caster...
And to an Artillerist, it might not be very useful at all, since it only gives a to-hit bonus to spell attacks (doing nothing for you save-based spells).
