Our DM allowed us a Feat upon character creation, and I took Fey-Touched INT. I took Silvery Barbs in addition to the Misty Step that comes with the feat.
As a Mark of Storm Half Elf with custom ability increase, the character started with 18 INT. (STR 8, DEX 14, CON 16, INT 18, WIS 10, CHA 8 with point buy. +2 INT, +1 CON racial, +1 INT from the feat.)
We are currently 3rd level, and we are in an Eberron Campaign that will go to level 20. After taking INT to 20 at 4th level, is there any reason to use any further ASIs toward abilities?
It seems feats would be the way to go for the 8th, 12th, 16th ASIs.
Flash of Genius at 7th level is the ultimate trump card, alleviating the need to raise attributes through ASIs, due to adding INT (+5 after raising it to 20) to saving throws, essentially turning those 8's (-1 to save) listed above, into 18s (+4) for save purposes.
Am I missing something? It seems like a no brainer to take Lucky, Alert or Mobile at 8th, 12th, 16th level. Although, boosting CON would of course improve the HP total, and DEX would improve your Initiative, it seems like those feats would be more bang for your buck upon leveling up.
Forgot to add, between Lucky and Silvery Barbs, a character could make up for deficiencies in straight Strength/DEX/whatever checks (non-saving throw checks).
It seems like a unique situation with Artificer where you can lever that Intelligence score to the point where you can take just Feats after max-ing that stat.

You're not wrong. There might be other feats, as well. For example, Elemental Adept (Fire) is commonly nice for an Artillerist...

It's not actually that unique. This is just another way of saying "Artificer is pretty SAD (Single Attribute Dependent)" and, yeah, it's one of the more SAD classes. This is also true for most Rogues and Dexterity, for example.

Yes- Elemental Adept would be particularly useful for an Artillerist subclass that seems heavily tilted towards fire damage. Thanks for the response.
I understand what SAD means. I guess I was referring to the Flash of Genius feature, which seems to make the choice of Feats over ASI increases a more viable option.
It doesn't help the force cannon, which is his bonus action, but the character's damage cantrip is Fire Bolt (Guidance was the other), and then will rely on Scorching Ray in later levels with the SSI , I would imagine. The class gets Fireball, eventually, as well.
Elemental Adept would help the main action, but it would be tough to take at 8th level. I presume Lucky may be more useful, but who knows what the adventure will bring? Whatever it is, I am sure I will have the wrong spell prepared that day!
Ahhh, thanks. I didn’t catch that. There are other, more useful feats. I still can’t see any benefits to choosing the attributes over feats after reaching 20 INT and Flash of Genius, however.
I was hoping someone here would show me that thinking was wrong.

Thoughts?
I realize this is a minority opinion, but I would not favor boosting constitution. IMO you invested more than you should in constitution already.
The amount of extra hps a 2-point boost gives you is minimial. Better concentration saves though resilient is good, but then the +1 goes to waste and you could do even better on concentration saves with Eldritch adept and Eldritch Mind.
Having intelligence maxed actually limits the effectiveness of some potential feats, you could consider taking half feats at both 4th and 8th to get to 20 intelligence.
The Feats I like for this build are magic initiate, Lucky, Shadow Touched, Telepathic, Gift of Metallic Dragon, Gift of Gen Dragon. I would probably boost Wisdom on any of the half feats if intelligence was already maxed.

I'm a big fan of grabbing both fey and shadow touched on artificer. It's like 4 extra spells known and a free castings of each spell that are usually easy to sneak in during most days. Silent image or disguise self are nice seatbelt spells.

These are good. I wanted to give a shout out to Cause Fear as well. It pairs with shadow touched and that is a great once a day spell you will almost always find a use for (in addition to upcasting well).
I love Fey Touched and Shadow Touched. On a half caster these are huge boosting known spells and giving free casts that brings them closer to being full casters.

Flash of Genius can only be used 5x per day right? Depends on how many checks you’re doing I suppose.
