Hi guys. In a campaign I'm playing with some family friends, I'm playing an Artificer for the first time, and we recently got to level 3, so several of us are getting to choose subclasses. I've narrowed down my choices to Artillerist or Alchemist, but I want something that will play off the other characters well. We currently have a Rogue, Druid, Fighter, Paladin, Bard, Wizard, and Ranger. Which subclass do you guys think would go well with those classes?
Okay, thanks. I was just wondering because a lot of the kids in the group are more new to D&D, so I was hoping to let them choose first and then make a descion off of that, but we already have a paladin and a ranger, so I think I'll be an artillerist.
The alchemist tends to be more of a support while the artillerist tends to be more of a blaster. You could consider going for whichever your party has less of. Your party seems to have a good mix of damage and utility/support, so you'd have to think about how the other players have been playing their classes.
I say tend because they can still fill the other role if needed. Alchemist still gets a damage to their spell damage but has more supportive features. They get a lot of buffs and curative abilities. Artillerist can pump out a small but frequent amount of temporary HP but has more damaging abilities. They get both AoE and single target damage.
Obviously, you can also try to figure out which would suit your character more, though that's something you'd know best.
