I am working on a clockwork knight. Halfling artificer.I read that the mount “defender” goes after you in initiative order. I want to use lances and not bows. I want to be able to charge up to target and attack with lances. Not soot with a bow. Charge up to target and do nothing.
Help me understand how to best use defender as mount as I described above.
If your DM doesn't let you have your Defender act on your turn when you're using it as a mount, you'll have to make use of readied actions.
On your turn, you use your Bonus Action, then ready an Attack Action for when you're in range. Then on your Defender's turn, it runs you into range, you use your Readied Action to make your attacks, and then your Defender finishes its turn with any actions or additional movement it might have.
If the DM allows the Spelljammer races, you might also consider being an Autognome instead of a Halfling, because as Constructs, the Defender's ability to restore hit points to other Constructs can be used to revive you if you fall unconscious, or just take a big hit.
