I have been moving away from the min max ways that I learned back in 1978. I recently made a character named Snot who is a Goblin Artificer Alchemist Cook. I used the back story of my character being a failed cook (variant on a failed merchant/Hermit back ground) from the Fey Realm. I received permission to let my character have the chef feat in exchange of loss of Fury of the Small. In short, I made a ill tempered goblin chef who experiments alchemist potions through his cooking, brewing, and herbalist skills. What do you all think?
I love it. I can appreciate the joy in trying to find all the ways to min-max, but for myself I love interesting mechanics that let me interact with the game in unexpected ways. I let my DM worry about balance and try to give them interesting backstory to play with as we go through the main questline.
That's awesome. My Artificer is a jack of all trades. I enjoy being able to do all sorts of fun stuff even though he's small and not very effective vs the dragon we're fighting.

As I get older, I find the journey is more fun than the victory. My DMs may not appreciate my zaney characters, but when I DM, I appreciate theirs.

Artificers seem to me to be a very colorful class but not exactly a room clearing master. I made my Goblin as more of a character vs a min/max master.
