Basically the title. It's also the only thing holding me back from moving over to the new edition as it is a very interesting class and they could have used this as an excuse to bring it to the spotlight. Every thing I've seen with classes has artificer as an after thought.

More importantly, WOtC was not trying to include every class, subclass or player species in the game. From the get go they intended to initially update only the core. Frankly I’m surprised that they actually changed out some of the subclasses from the 2014 PHB. The artificer will be updated in a later book just as it first appeared in latter book than the 2014 PHB.
Artificers are from Eberron. Yes, they have taken stuff from Eberron and included them in other books, like Tasha's Cauldron of Everything and Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse, but it's still from Eberron. I can see why they wouldn't want that in the core rules. It's probably going to be printed in a new book about Eberron or of the "of Everything" series.

Technically artificers are not as they appear in Tasha's cauldron of everything which is NOT set in ebberon. And it isn't difficult to adapt them outside of ebberon.

Just because they were reprinted in Tasha's doesn't mean they're not from Eberron. I'm not saying they shouldn't be played outside of Eberron, nor that they're difficult to adapt outside of it. I'm just saying that I understand why they're not in the PHB. A lot of things aren't in the PHB, it's not supposed to be the ultimate player sourcebook where everything is. It's supposed to be the core, and artificers don't feel as core material, they're a setting specific class that can be played outside of it if the DM wants to do it.
Artificer is not a core class. That's why it's not in the core rulebook.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
It not being a core class due to lack of popularity is kind of a self fulfilling prophecy when it doesn't get included in mainline books, imo. It's an interesting enough class that it definitely could be more popular, but the fact that it's behind a separate paywall will always make it less popular.
If Monk only appeared in Sword Coast Adventures Guide it would be a pretty unpopular class as well. I think OP has a solid point - it's not like there are other official classes out there in other books. IMO all classes should be in the PHB. 5e did away with class bloat from previous editions for a reason, and we no longer need to split them into different books.

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?
Ok let’s keep things a target. The question was why isn’t the artificer in the 2024 PHB. The answer is “ because WOtC considers it an optional class not a core class. “ Since the 3024 PHB is already out saying it should be in is a moot point. However, at the next iteration of the PHB it would be reasonable to include the Artificer (and only other new classes WOtC manages to come up with) in that volume.

Belated update, a beta update to artificer is in Unearthed Arcana as of 2025. There may be an official update when WotC publishes new Eberron book in late 2025.

As popular as the class is, it just isn't popular enough to be included in the Player's Handbook. Many tables don't even allow them.
Playing D&D since 1982
Have played every version of the game since Basic (Red Box Set), except that abomination sometimes called 4e.
