I assume several discussions have popped up around the new Eberron UA already (or will soon) so while I would also want to know the general thoughts I am asking specifically for myself situation.
I was very recently invited to campaign which I am still technically building my character for. Its a pirate campaign so I plan on making my Vedalken Artificer the quartermaster, the person who keeps the ship running like a well-oiled machine. And I have also been imagining them as the planner, especially since I gave them keen mind (we’re starting at level 4) which along with an atlas could theoretically allow him to theoretically know where they are at any time. And as you could guess from that, I am not going for the most powerful character. Especially given that I know one of the other players is very much about making incredibly powerful characters, I do not feel like I have to supply a large amount of damage. Currently, I’ve been operating under the assumption that he would be an artillerist, but the new UA has me conflicted. On one hand, Cartographer is a good fit for his role. Support is something the party lacks (with the other characters I know of being a rogue and a sorcerer) and good for someone whose main role aboard the ship is making sure everything is working as it should. On the other hand, artillerist is objectively (I think) more powerful and seems to fit his vibe better. With him being an ex-naval engineer. Although that could just be the fact that the cartographer came into existence after I started the character. And in short, I am still unsure and I would appreciate knowing atleast if going the cartographer route would be worth it
Well the Cartographer subclass is still in unearthed arcana so you should ask you DM if they are gonna allow playtest material, that's the first thing. It one thing to allow 2024 and 2014 content in a campaign its another thing entirely to allow unearthed arcana.
However assuming it is allowed, personally I would say the Cartographer is more powerful then the Artillerist. The Artillerist is probably better at dealing damage but the Cartographer is more likely to drastically change how a fight is going. IMO at least. This is because while the Artillerist is better at damage than the Cartographer, other classes like the fighter will be able to easily out damage the Artillerist. So the support the Cartographer will offer will be a more drastic change to the overall effectiveness of your party, again IMO
If though you think the Artillerist fits your idea of the character better and you would prefer to focus more on damage then support, I think the Artillerist is a fine choice as well. The Artillerist is also more like AOE blaster damage as well, so if you like spamming AOE spells then perhaps the Artillerist is a better fit.
If your just asking if I think the Cartographer is more powerful then the Artillerist then the answer is yes.
