I was wondering if it was legal to have both the steel defender and animal companion out together in combat. Just conceptualizing some combos for artificer

Just remember health for both the steel defender and the animal companion comes from your class levels not character levels. If you are level 6 with three levels in ranger and 3 levels in artificer than your pets aren't going to be as strong. Also you may want to consider Artificer as your first three levels because of might of the master.
I was mucking around with this myself. My ultimate goal is to have at least a 9th level Ranger so I can learn Conjure Animals and have a Beast Companion who attacks on my action, a Steel Defender who attacks on my bonus action, and a Conjured Animal who attacks on its own initiative.
Probably very clunky and not as powerful but extremely fun. I would choose a Vedalken for the race and say they are trying to perfect the art of training beasts, whether is is steel, flesh or spirit beasts.

No reason it wouldn't be.
