The most thematic choice, in my opinion, is Rock Gnome. A Rock Gnome Guild Artisan Artificer is just about the most techy tech that ever teched.
As someone playing this exact race/class/background, it's a lot of fun.
Clan Crafter background is good for Artificers and Rock Gnomes because I believe it's the only background that gives you Tinker's Tools as starting equipment. Unless your DM gives them to you at the start of the campaign, you won't be able to do all the cool flavorful stuff that Artificers and Rock Gnomes can do until you get a set.
With Tasha's Cauldron of Everything coming out soon, any race will be able to get a +2 Int. At that point, the best race for artificers are probably going to be Mountain Dwarves or High Elves, due to the weapon proficiencies that they can trade for tool proficiencies.
