I'm working on a warforged artificer that has a great love for insects and builds little steampunk versions of them to carry out his spells. I'm looking for other creative minds to help me think of fun ways to incorporate this personally trait into my gameplay. Insect-like body modifications and suggestions for a steel defender/homunculus are also welcome.
Some of the most fun I've had with my warforged artificer is making all the alternative ways to "cast" spells.
There's a lot you can do here, probably the most obvious would be mechanical fireflies for light spells. You could also style some of them as venom/ichor of bugs, like guidance is the concentrated form of some magical insect from so and so delivered in a sometimes unexpected syringe.
I just discovered the race of Thri-Kreen and might have my Warforged alter his body to look something like that. Other ideas for this build include:
Stinkbug for Acid Splash, fire ant for fire magic, Lighteningbug for light/electric magic, butterfly for healing magic, cocoon for Sanctuary, mosquito for energy/magic draining, cicada for Alarm, walking stick for Catapult, leaf bug for Disguise, cockroach for Retreat, moth for Feather fall, snail for Grease, grasshopper for Jump, fly for Arcane eye, scarab beetle for necro magic, hercules beetle for lockpicking
I'll probably make dragonfly wings to attach to my back to fly, a shield that looks like a goliath beetle, and a sword that looks like a centipede.
I'm thinking a rhino beetle as my steel defender and a wasp with a crossbow stinger as my homunculus.
think that the entire, "dragonfly wings to attach to my back to fly," part is a bit OP but as long as your DM is okay, then have at. A rhino beetle is probably a good choice: you could have both bludgeoning and piercing custom attacks as well as (if your DM agrees) a climbing speed. Have fun!

I'm thinking either Kamen Rider or Blue Beetle from DC comics for your look.
