So i had this fun idea for a glam rocker-barbarian and I really love the idea of him gaining on stage-makeup and his clothes gaining more vibrant colors while he rages to really boost the feeling of him being in his own little centre of attention. To not brake any rules I want it to not function as a disguise self, so that everyone still sees that it's him, but a more flamboyant version of himself, so it really doesn't change anything mechanics-wise. This particular barbarian is a wild magic barbarian, if anyone's curious, and has a few levels of bard on him for RP backstory-reasons.
Do you have any other unique visual RP-ideas for a barbarian raging, other than the usual red eyes and heavy packed veiny muscle-barbarian we see everywhere? I would love to hear!
I DMed a game once that included a spoiled high-born gnome man-child whose rage was presented as petulant tantrums that got out of control, complete with frustrated tears and immature wailing. His catchphrase could have been "This is so. Un. FAIR!!"
I am currently running a shifter barbarian flavored up to appear as a tiefling whose rages involve actual transformation via racial shifting and Path of the Beast. His personality has gone a different direction since then, but he was originally intended to be a Jekyll / Hyde type of character where the regular Jekyll persona is constantly afraid of what might happen when Hyde manifests but not because Hyde is a monster, but because he's actually a very smooth, likable person who makes the Jekyll side feel overshadowed, like an overachieving older sibling.
I've also considered a warforged whose rages are periods of cold, ultra-efficient action rather than wild bouts of emotional fury.
Love the rockstar idea, very creative. I don't know if this would be of use to you or not, but in 3e I used the general cantrips that have been translated into Thaumaturgy, Druidcraft and the like in 5e, to color hair, nails, lips, basically any aesthetic / make-up type changes that, like you pointed out in your post, wouldn't be enough to function like Disguise Self but still gives you a way to reliably "get into costume" more or less before a performance. And those bard levels could get you some great stage effect spells like Pyrotechnics and Dancing Lights, maybe an auditory illusion spell to create a swell of crowd cheering as you take the stage.

Battle Trance or Battle dance. When he gets quiet, he gets dangerous.
