One of my players is using dnd beyond character generator. He is a half elf barb. He tried to select almost 1k gold in starting equipment including a breast plate with the add item feature. but i put a kabosh on that. So with standard starting equipment he then asked to trade javelins for hide armor which i am ok with.
Now Dnd beyond is using his unarmored defense even if hide armor is equipped? It Wasnt doing that with the breastplate i made him delete. Its just using unarmored now as its higher even if hide is equipped.
Am i missing something in the rules or is that a glitch? Honestly i dont game with many barbs and ive never encountered this issue prior. He is also a new player that is scyping into our group and i want to make sure there is no confusion in the rules as he has never played before.
It's an oddity with D&D Beyond; the character sheet always shows the best of all your AC calculations, but it doesn't ignore unarmored defence when you're wearing armour (even though it should).
That said, in this case there is no benefit to the player having actual hide armour, versus simply wearing clothes in the same style, so it makes more sense to just use the unarmored defence and treat the "armour" as cosmetic.

Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.

It might be a bit late to reply but for that player if he wants better ac tell him that instead of Hide armor he should get a shield since in the Phb under barbarian it tells you that you can't wear armor but can use a shield with unarmored defense.
