As the title states, I'm new to D&D and playing a barbarian that is also an archaeologist. What I'm wondering is if I were to multiclass, what would be best to keep more line with the flavor of being an archaeologist versus what could actually be useful? My character, a Homebrewed Beastman with Tiger ancestry, wasn't created to fight persay but swinging a pickaxe into rock sure helps with the strength. In addition, my character is a record keeper. Then he send those records to his archaeology college/museum for exhibition and research.
I originally thought Artificer but now I'm not entirely sure. Any suggestion, thoughts, and questions are greatly appreciated
Artificer is probably the closest thing to an archaeologist that you're going to get. None of the D&D classes really focus on science at all. The only thing to keep in mind is that Artificers are heavily dependent on Intelligence, which is often a dump stat for Barbarians.
My recommendations: Lore Bard: gets you interested in ancient tales and story Knowledge Cleric: More worshipful than you really want Warlock: Warlocks delve in ancient knowledge Artificer if you want more science
- Expertise in two skills of your choice (maybe History and Investigation?)
- Sneak Attack can be used with Strength-based attacks, as long as you use Finesse weapons.
- The ability score requisite for multiclassing into Rogue (Dexterity) is more generally useful to the Barbarian than the prerequisites for other classes.
- If you’re using the 2024 Player’s Handbook, then learning Rare Languages is harder than in 2014, but the Thieves’ Cant feature lets you learn an extra language that can be standard or rare (as well as learning Thieves’ Cant), which is an appropriate bonus for an archaeologist.
I’ll pitch the Monk. Spent time studying at a monestary ancient text about ancient lands/structures, etc. With history/religion background. You picked up Warrior of Mercy (if dipping 3levels) to heal your crew during your archaeological work. Because it was hard to get healing and caring in the treacherous zones you venturing. And you don’t have to worry about stats (ie intelligence)

That's not a bad suggestion. My three highest stats are STR (15), DEX (14), and then INT/CON (With 13 for both) so intelligence builds aren't that hard to do. But I like the healing idea.
INT is tied in third with CON with 13 for my stats. STR and DEX are first and second respectively so I can do intelligence builds.
Unconventional choice, but you could add Wizard to your options. Choosing ritual and utility spells (e.g. Comprehend Languages) would give your Barbarian a bit more to do out-of-combat. Plus, you could take a ranged cantrip for those times when your enemy is rudely staying out of reach.
If you took two levels, you’d get Scholar (2024 rules), which gives you expertise in one skill.

Well if intell is 13, Wizard would work. Taking utility spells, and one of the best cantrip for utility mage hand and Tenser’s disk as 1st level spell, then pyf.

There's an Archeologist background in Tomb of Annihilation, and you can always update that using the guidelines in the 2024 PH.
